For years, Genova University Press (GUP) has been committed to working in ways that minimise its environmental impact, in line with the University’s policies, which aim to promote sustainable and inclusive development actions and projects.
With the adoption of the 2021–2026 Strategic Plan, the University of Genoa identified 12 goals to reach during the rectoral mandate, including sustainability and inclusion, in accordance with the United Nations 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 17 goals that the 193 UN member countries have committed to achieving by 2030.
Environmental Sustainability
- GUP strives to print volumes using eco-friendly techniques and materials, by reducingwaste and minimising the environmental impact of the printing process through innovative methods.
- Books are printed in limited runs to avoid the waste of energy and material involved in production. Reprints are requested only when necessary, and many GUP volumes are open access, freely downloadable in PDF or EPUB format from our website.
- The staffalso seeks to act sustainably in everyday choices, for example, by practicing waste separation and using bottles that can be refilled at free filtered water dispensers installed throughout the University.
Social Sustainability
- Genova University Press is aligning with theEuropean accessibility act, which aims to improve the market for accessible products and services across EU Member States by identifying barriers and establishing common rules. The directive covers products and services of critical importance to people with disabilities, including e-book. GUP is therefore committed to publishing increasingly accessible PDFs (following PDF/UA and WCAG standards) and is preparing to produce EPUB3 files, which is the standard that best meets the directive’s requirements. All accessible GUP books can be found on the dedicated page.
- We are committed to publishing works that address socially relevant topics.
- GUP seeks to collaborate with printers actively engaged in social projects, in line with the University’s goal of enhancing the well-being of its community.
- The press aims to bring environmental and social sustainability topics to the public by participating in festivals and events, such as Suq Genova, through talks and workshops. Moreover, we collaborate with the University Sustainability Sector to organise activities and projects for the public.
