Il libro raccoglie gli appunti di una lezione dedicata agli studenti del Dottorato di ricerca in Design per raccontare le modalità del progetto europeo Urbact III. 2nd Chance. Waking up the sleeping giants sulla riattivazione dei grandi spazi abbandonati di diverse città attraverso azioni di design e comunicazione. Si tratta di metodi e pratiche replicabili, che contaminano e sono influenzati da questo campo disciplinare, per affrontare una sfida che oggi ha sempre più bisogno di coinvolgere la comunità e le risorse locali come valore aggiunto per conferire qualità formale e strutturale agli interventi.  

The book collects the notes from a lesson of the PhD Course in Design about the methods of the European project Urbact III 2nd Chance. Waking up the sleeping giants on the reactivation of the large abandoned spaces of different cities through design and communication actions. These are replicable strategies and practices that contaminate and are influenced by this disciplinary field, to face a challenge that today is increasingly demanding the participation of the community and of the local resources as an added value to give formal and structural quality to the interventions.

Silvia Pericu, architetto e ricercatrice in Design presso il Dipartimento Architettura e Design della Scuola Politecnica di Genova, orienta la propria ricerca al design dell’innovazione sociale come contributo attivo allo sviluppo e alla trasformazione dei territori con riferimento alla salute, alla sicurezza e alla sostenibilità. Su questi temi ha coordinato nel biennio 2016-2018 l’attività di partenariato dell’Università di Genova nel network Urbact III, 2nd Chance, sulla riattivazione di grandi edifici dismessi per uno sviluppo urbano sostenibile.  

Silvia Pericu, architect and senior lecturer in Design at the Department Architecture and Design of the Polytechnic School in Genoa, focuses her research on social innovation design and its capabilities to contribute to the development and transformation of territories with reference to health, safety and sustainability. On this topic she coordinated in the last two years the partnership activity of the University of Genoa, in the URBACT III Action Planning Network: 2nd Chance. Waking up sleeping giants, for a sustainable urban development.
