Repository and Open Access Policies

Repository policy

Genova University Press ensures the hosting and archiving of its digital products in accessible PDF format, and guarantees the long-term preservation of materials published in its Open Access journals through different types of archiving systems. GUP is committed to ensuring permanent preservation, accessibility, and the widest dissemination of academic research.

Genova University Press encourages authors to publish manuscripts in institutional repositories or on personal websites before and during the submission process, and promotes publication without embargo prior to final publication, in order to encourage productive exchange and increase citations of published work.

Open Access

  1. Genova University Press is governed by a Regulation issued by Rector’s Decree No. 4518 of 04.11.2025, in force since 07.11.2025. In particular:

GUP aims primarily to enhance and support, from an editorial perspective, the scientific production of the University, promoting and disseminating research, teaching innovation, outreach activities, engagement with the territory, and the image of the University. To achieve these objectives, GUP may also collaborate in editorial activities with entities whose purposes are consistent with its mission.
    • Art. 11 – Open Access
GUP promotes the open access dissemination of its publications in accordance with the current internal regulations on the matter, in particular through the archiving and indexing of works in the University’s digital repository.
  2. The University of Genoa has a Regulation on Open Access to scientific literature, issued by Rector’s Decree No. 3635 of 02.10.2017 and in force since 17.10.2017. In particular:
    • Art. 8 - Genova University Press

Long-Term Preservation

Genova University Press archives PDF files of articles published in “GUP Journals” on a server owned by the University of Genoa. In addition, GUP has further archiving options:

  • it may store a digital copy (accessible PDF) of each article in the digital object repository managed by the University Library System, called “Doge”; archiving in “Doge” is based on the open source software DSpace GLAM; for long-term digital preservation purposes, DSpace generates AIP (Archival Information Package) packages enriched with preservation metadata and records every significant event in the lifecycle of each digital object, assigning it a persistent identifier via the Handle system. DSpace also includes a checksum verification routine for periodic integrity checks of stored files. The digital storage of materials archived in the “Doge” platform is currently hosted on an AWS infrastructure in Dublin. The materials are accessible in open access at http://doge.unige.net
  • it may also archive content through the commercial long-term digital preservation system “Portico”, of which the University Library System is a member.

Dissemination

Genova University Press ensures maximum open access accessibility of “GUP Journals”:

  • on the publisher’s website at the “GUP Journals” page
  • in the institutional green open access repository of research outputs “IRIS Unige
  • in the GLAM open access repository of digital objects “Doge
  • by facilitating access to its journals through the discovery tool “Unopertutto Unige
